Lydia's Profile

Lydia is the former basketball captain of the Coastal Queens team. Lydia lost her mother early 2008 and was forced to return to her rural home of Busia, which is in western Kenya and on the border of Uganda because no one could care for her and her sister in Mombasa. Busia has one of the highest infection rates of HIV/AIDS in Kenya and is known to be an area in which women have the least rights and access to education, healthcare, and other public resources. It is still a common practice for men to have several wives, which in turn leads to increasing vulnerability to HIV/AIDS. Due to these circumstances, it was vital that Lydia returned to Mombasa where she is able is develop and receive a proper education.

Madame Rose, a teacher at the local community center, takes care of Lydia so she can study at Bomu Primary School.
